Black Mountain of Maine welcomes uphill skiing, split-boarding & snowshoeing at our resort. For everyone's safety, we ask that you adhere to the policy as described below:
• Uphill travel during and outside our normal operating hours is done solely at the individual's own risk. Any workers encountered outside normal operating hours are not ski patrol. No rescue services are available outside normal operating hours. BMOM has a large amount of terrain designated as backcountry. This includes our glades, hike to trails and glades descending off the backside on our neighbor Mahoosuc Land Trust. None of the backcountry is opened or swept by ski patrol and there are known and unknown hazards which are not marked. Use your own judgment on what is safe and we urge caution.
• Individuals must purchase an uphill ticket, uphill season pass, alpine ticket, regular alpine season pass, snowshoe ticket or an Uphill New England Pass to access BMOM property. You may purchase any of the aforementioned passes at our ticket window or online.
• Black Mountain of Maine operations reserves the right to cancel or modify uphill access at any time for any reason. Please refer to the mountain report for any changes to general uphill policy, current trail status, restrictions pertaining to time of access/usage, or permissible locations of uphill or downhill access. The mountain is always closed preseason as mountain operations prepares the resort for the upcoming season. At all times stay off any closed trails. If snowmaking operations or grooming are in progress and you find yourself on that trail, it is your responsibility to get yourself off it immediately. It is the skier’s responsibility to avoid, give right of way and yield to all mountain operations.
• Unless otherwise stated, all uphill access from the base of the ski area is by the Osekare trail (refer to the Uphill Map for location of the trail head). The Avenza App is also useful. The Osekare is considered backcountry and is never swept by Ski Patrol. Skis and split boards with climbing skins, or snowshoes are the only means of access. No foot traffic or post-holing is allowed at any time on the Osekare. All snowshoe users are required to descend via alternative routes as designated by the mountain report or as directed by Ski Patrol. The Osekare trail is not designated for downhill travel.
• General times when access is allowed to the Osekare are as follows. Please note the mountain report is the final word on access and should be referenced daily. Days when lifts are spinning which typically are Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday plus Maine school vacation days, the Osekare is open and descent on open trails is allowed between 9:15am to 3:45pm. The backcountry exits 3,4,5 are all open at this time if conditions allow.
• On a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday when the mountain is closed, descent from 2pm to 6pm on only the Upper Androscoggin to the Upper and Lower Sunday Trails are allowed. The Lower Androscoggin is closed. All other mountain trails are considered closed. Exits 3, 4, or 5 may be used to access backcountry terrain. A day or season pass is required, but one should know that no ski patrol are present and unmarked hazards may exist. Outside of these hours on these days riders may only use Exit 5 as designated in the next paragraph.
• Outside of operating hours riders may only use Exit 5 and are only allowed to descend the backcountry trails Bagaduce, Wesserunsett, Saco, or the East Bowl (via the Headwaters glade). Riders may use the lower portion of the Sunday Trail, but must keep to far riders left. All other trails are considered closed for mountain operations. A pass is still required during these times. BMOM backcountry policies apply and individuals are expected to make safety decisions on the fact no ski patrol or mountain personnel are available to help and the conditions regarding hazards are never assessed.
• The following list identifies the (5) exits of the Osekare (refer to the mountain report and uphill map). All uphill traffic should stay within the confines of the Osekare trail and use one of the (5) designated exits with signage. All terrain accessed by the Osekare trail is for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders only.
• Osekare Exit 1: Middle Allagash trail access. Only to be used if the Allagash Trail is actively in an open status (Refer to the latest Mountain Report).
• Osekare Exit 2: The preferred route to ascend directly to the top of the Summit Triple lift and alpine trails at Black Mountain of Maine. Note: This is the most direct route to the Ski Patrol summit headquarters and accesses all open trails. Above Exit 2 only backcountry terrain exists with some of it taking you far away from BMOM Resort.
• Osekare Exit 3: Turn right onto the Crossroads glade and towards the summit triple. Turn left towards Bearclaw glade which descends away from BMOM on Mahoosuc Land Trust property.
• Osekare Exit 4: Turn right onto the Muddy glade and towards the Summit Triple. Turn left towards Merrymeeting glade which descends away from BMOM on Mahoosuc Land Trust property.
• Osekare Exit 5: At the radio towers: turn right for backcountry trails Bagaduce, Wesserunsett, Saco, and to access the East Bowl via the Headwaters glade.
• At all times in case of emergency contact 911 or ski patrol during operating hours.
• All skis must have brakes or safety leashes, and all skiers and snowboarders must abide by the skiers’ responsibility code at all times within Black Mountain of Maine property.
• No sledding is allowed anywhere on Black Mountain of Maine property, unless otherwise authorized.
• Overnight stays on the mountain are not permitted.
• The uphill policy is not applicable to users of the Black & White hiking trail, for purposes of hiking/snowshoeing.
• Only service animals are allowed on the Osekare trail.
• Please read the following Maine Statute that applies to skiing and riding as well as BMOM Backcountry Policy:
Under Maine Law, a skier assumes the risk of any injury to person or property resulting from any of the inherent dangers and risks of skiing and may not recover from any ski area operator for any injury resulting from any of the inherent dangers and risks of skiing, including, but no limited to: existing and changing weather conditions; existing and changing snow conditions, such as ice, hardpack, powder, packed powder, corn, crust and slush and cut-up, granular and machine-made snow; surface or subsurface conditions, such as dirt, grass, bare spots, rocks, stumps, trees, forest growth or other natural objects and collisions with such natural objects; lift towers, lights, signs, posts, fences, mazes or enclosures, hydrants, water or air pipes, snowmaking and snow-grooming equipment, marked or lit trail maintenance vehicles and snowmobiles, and other man-made structures or objects; variations in steepness or terrain, whether natural or as a result of slope design, snowmaking or grooming operations, including, but not limited to, freestyle terrain, jumps, roads and catwalks or other terrain modifications; the presence of and collisions with other skiers; and the failure of skiers to ski safely, in control or within their own abilities.

• Anytime you are on or have entered Black Mountain of Maine property you will need to have either a ticket or a season pass.
• Ski at your own risk. Be aware if you leave Black Mountain of Maine ski area boundaries & become lost or injured you will need to call 911 for assistance. Black Mountain of Maine may be part of the initial response, but will only do so under the direction of outside agencies. Any parties requiring rescue involving outside state or government agencies will be charged rescue costs.
• Have knowledge of the daily trail report & check in with ski patrol regarding changing conditions.
• Have knowledge of the area & your surroundings. You may find the maps from Avenza App useful.
• Have the required advanced skills.
• Have a couple of ski partners.
• Black Mountain is unique. We have a working relationship with neighboring landowners such as Mahoosuc Land Trust, as well as other landowners who allow multi use access to privately owned property. Know before you go. Be smart. Note: when we talk backcountry we mean off property/outside the skiing & riding boundary. When we talk sidecountry we are talking about areas within the Black Mountain of Maine property boundaries that are not marked with resort endorsed signage. This includes trails that are not marked or that may have been marked by a 3rd party. Resort endorsed signs are signs that meet NSAA standards: green backed signs with white letters & a circle denote beginner trails, blue backed signs with white letters denote intermediate trails & black backed signs with white letters denote expert trails. Any trail within our property boudary that is unmarked or marked by a 3rd party volunteer organization is considered sidecountry.
• Most of the backcountry terrain feeds back into the resort. Some does not. Know your terrain & plan a ride back to Black Mountain Ski Resort if necessary.
• Watch for hazards. The woods are littered with rocks, stumps, fallen trees & other objects that can damage you & your equipment.
• Ski & ride in groups of three. If someone gets hurt, you'll need one person to fetch help & the other to stay with the injured. Radios & cell phones should be carried.
• We don't ever sweep the backcountry. Getting lost sucks. Getting lost at night really sucks.
• Wear a helmet. We won't make you, but the best (& smartest) already have them on.
• Respect your ability level. If you're wondering whether or not you should attempt something, then the answer is "no".
